Fragrant flower

The common white jasmine is easy to grow

THERE ARE many species of jasmine (or Jessamine), which are grown for their fragrant flowers. Popularly used in garland decoration, the name, Jasmine, originated from the Persian-Arabic, Yasmin, meaning `white flower. The plant has its origins in Persia and the Himalayas. Jasmine is called chameli in Hindi, mallepuvvu in Telugu. The plants are strong climbers, and will cling to any available support. The plant is deciduous or semi-evergreen (according to climate) with pinnate leaves composed of five or seven leaflets, and terminal clusters of small, pure white tubular flowers, with four or five spreading lobes. The plant flowers in summer.

White Jasmine (Jasminum Officinale), a climber with slender, four-angled rambling stems, is used to cover walls, railings, in borders or in large pots. Good garden soil with plenty of leaf mould and compost with little sand is used to grow this plant. It requires regular watering during growth.

Jasmine needs bright sunlight for flowering. It grows rapidly and needs thinning out and severe pruning after flowering so that it flowers well the next year.

The propagation is by cuttings.
