Husain makes a killing
One of the paintings from Husian's Paris Suite
ON THE night before New Year's Eve, Husain Sankalana, M.F. Husain's gallery in Koramangala, was abuzz with some great news. That a set of 22 oil paintings titled Paris Suite created by the master painter had been picked up by a collector for a whopping sum of hold your breath a million dollars!
Confirming the news over phone from Mumbai, a justifiably delighted M. F. Husain, said that this achievement would certainly provide a big boost to the contemporary Indian art scene, which, according to him, is going through a depressingly slow run in recent times. The very fact that a series of paintings has been bought by a single collector is a recognition of his efforts to extending the horizon from individual pieces.
Giving a brief background, he narrated how on his 88th birth anniversary year, he had visited Paris, and the Paris Suite was thus created during his fortnight stay in Paris.
Husain recalled how in his early decades as an artist, he went virtually unnoticed. But instead of getting disheartened, he had redoubled his efforts. Husain assured that the Paris Suite collection would certainly be brought to Bangalore in the early months of 2004 itself.
