As we ring in the New Year, let's take a look at the music that rules the dance floors across the country
|
ALL RIGHT, let's face facts. Across the globe, it's always the dhinchak music that soars the charts, with only occasional exceptions. Call it hip-hop, house music, trance, or plain dance songs, fast-paced music is definitely in, and promises to stay for a long time to come. What could be a better time than this to look back and jive to the dance hits of the past year and shake a leg or two.
During the last two years or so, Indipop saw quite a few club DJs belting out innovative and interesting remix albums where an evergreen (sometimes not-so-evergreen!) song is given a new life, and ends up becoming more popular than the original. It's the technology that does the job a "scratch" here and an "echo" there ensuring a sudden interest in Hindi dance numbers among party-goers. Annual Hits 2003 (Times Music, CD, Rs. 195) features a handful of last year's DJ remix hits by DJ Suketu, DJ Akbar Sami, Jayantha Pathak, Leslie Lewis, and the rest. Kicking off with "Pyar Zindagi Hai" (originally from the movie Muqaddar Ka Sikandar), the album takes you on an up-tempo ride with tracks such as "Hai Re Hai Tera Ghoongta" (from Dhongi), "Koi Yahan Nache Nache", "Chalte Chalte" and a few more. Viva's "Chori Chori", "Lut Gaye" from the movie Samay, and two world music tracks "Piya Bavari" and "Punjab" add to the mood of the album.
Non-Stop RDX Shots (Times Music, CD, Rs. 195) is another album that is hugely danceable. An album with 28 R.D Burman hits, remixed non-stop by Hyasinth D'Souza, it kicks off with "Yeh Vada Raha" and goes on to "Do Lafzon Ki Hai", "Jaane Jaan", "Aaj Ki Raat", "Piya Tu", and loads of other RD hits. It is amazing to hear how different the music can sound today with electronic accomplishments thrown in. If an hour of non-stop partying is what you are looking for, this is one album you must not miss.
If you are the kind who jives only to international music, Best Of Dance Hits 1993-2003 (Sony Music, CD, Rs. 399) is a must-have for you. Two CDs with 39 tracks that disco freaks worldwide have shook their legs to invoke some pleasant feelings of reminiscence. Though the titles may not sound familiar, it's the music that you have been listening to in your neighbourhood disco or coffee shop. One definitely misses some hip-hop and R&B in the album, but the tempo is unbelievably high, and it is amazing how this tempo is maintained all through the entire 39 tracks. Lou Bega, Vengaboys, Run DMC, 2 Unlimited, Los Del Rio, and Eiffel 65 are some of the names that catch your attention, while tracks like "Tarzan & Jane", "YMCA", "Hero", and "Stayin' Alive" have been hugely popular during 1993-2003. An excellent collector's album for any dance music fan.
Take your pick from these three albums and feel energised. Happy New Year to you all!
