Chords & Notes

ONE MALAYALAM film song that really struck a chord in the hearts of the discerning listener last year was `Chempaneerpooveduthu... .' in the film `Sthithi.' Set to music and rendered sensitively by Unni Menon this song somehow failed to win the accolades it deserved. In fact, this has been the singer's fate in Malayalam films, this despite some whole-hearted efforts.

However, Unni Menon is still a big rage in Tamil movies, churning out hit after hit and with numerous awards coming his way as recognition for his efforts. The latest being the South Indian Cinematographers Association award for best playback singer for the song `Engae antha vennila... ' from the film Varushamellam Vasantham. This one is easily the pick of the five songs of the album (Hit Musics, Rs. 45.00) that has six songs from the film `Unnai Ninaithu' too. Unni and Sujatha breathe life into a delightful duet `Yennai thalattum... ' in this film. Chirpi, who has composed the tunes for both these films, has also used the voices of Hariharan, Unnikrishnan and a host of young, promising singers. `Yaar intha devathai... ' by Hariharan in `Unnai Ninaithu' is another song that is bound to linger long.

It was A. R. Rahman who gave Unni Menon his major break in Tamil films with that landmark song in the blockbuster `Roja.' This association has created some excellent melodies even amongst a host of fast numbers. In the latest Bharatiraja film `Kangalal Kaidhu Sei' (Hit Musics, Rs. 45.00) Rahman has handpicked Unni Menon and Chinmayi for a lovely duet `Ennuir thozhi... ' Another song from this film that stands out is Hariharan's `Azhagiya Cinderella... '

A. M. Rathnam's pet project, `Ennakku 20 Unnakku 18' (Primestar Audio, Rs. 45.00) has six tracks, all of them hip pop, trans mixes, vibrant. Even here A. R. Rahman finds a place for Unni Menon in a song beginning `Santhipoma... ' which he sings along with Chinmayi, Anupama and chorus.
