Tile temptation

Keramos' range of tiles creates a warm, earthy feel and adds a contemporary touch to homes and offices

FROM BEING used to decorate interiors in Europe, Egypt and Persia to becoming a modern design feature, tiles have evolved over 2,000 years.

More recently, they have moved out of bathrooms and kitchens and into terraces, fireplaces, courtyards, living rooms and walkways. Even in the traditional kitchen-bathroom areas, people are looking to be different, says Vikram Chopra of the Delhi-based tile manufacturing company, Keramos. "They no longer want plain pink or blue tiles with printed flowers or vegetables." Tiles are even being used on outdoor furniture for easy maintenance.

Keramos' new range combines stone and tile to create a warm, earthy feel and colourful, cheerful textures with a contemporary touch. The stone and tile collection comes in various hues and has a slightly uneven look.

The pebbled-surface of the tiles are perfect for a courtyard while Tuscany tiles give the floor a worn terracotta look. Also new to the collection are the stoneware tiles that lend a Spanish touch and the antique stone finish that makes floors look fashionably aged. Tiles are even laid out in carpet-like designs to give the floor an ornate patina.

Keramos combines mosaic, tile and stone to create handcrafted and hand-decorated pieces that add aesthetic value to any interior or exterior, claims Chopra. Marble, as the traditional flooring material, is being replaced by a range of colourful, textured tiles that can give a living room a rustic or a Medieval feel. The versatility of the medium makes it possible to combine different design elements to create unusual surfaces. Polished slate, stone and clay in tile form are popular at present.

Keramos tiles are priced between Rs. 100 and Rs. 400 a square foot and are available at Apparao Galleries, Ground Floor, 7 Wallace Gardens, Third Street, Nungambakkam.
