Kumaran School held the first ever online poll for the Student Council recently

SRI KUMARAN Children's Home (SKCH) seems to be leading the way when it comes to IT. The school recently conducted one of the first ever online elections for the Student Council. "A software was created for this purpose. The photo of the nominee and the name was on the screen and the voters had to click on their choice and submit," says Deepa Sridhar, Principal, SKCH. "It was easier for the children because they sometimes know the faces of the students they want in the

Council but not their names. Also, we wanted to ensure validity of all the votes. We want to integrate technology in the lives of students."

It is a fringe benefit that the student voters feel important and understand the voting process.

The school's Student Information Management System is in place with each child's academic and extracurricular details. "The idea is to build a dossier for the student so that at the end of 12 or 13 years, the student can give details of their education, while applying to universities. Our ultimate goal is to move towards a paperless school," says Deepa.

Hema, an SKCH parent says: "The circulars from the school reach us through e-mail and we feel closer to the child's school activities than ever before. But there are many parents who do not check mail regularly and this is not helpful to them."

Which is probably why e-mail circulars are still optional and time-tested communications system still holds good.
