Subbaiah Narayan's fabulous achievements hold out hope for the State's karatekas

Narayan: `Karate brings into focus self-discipline.'
SUBBAIAH NARAYAN took to karate like the proverbial "fish to water". And this fascination to the chosen sport came about at a very tender age. But it was under Sensei Umapathi, as a 11-year-old, that Narayan began his training stint at the YMCA, in right earnest.
The 31-year-old presently working as a technician at the Jaydeva Institute of Cardiology, however, is now into moulding young karetekas into responsible and disciplined citizens of tomorrow.
"Kids are our future. A sport like karate brings into focus self discipline and strength of character, along with the feel-fit, keep-fit attitude," says Narayan. And it is this undeterred devotion to the sport that won Narayan the "Lifetime Achievement Award 2004" from Karate Times, a registered Martial Arts magazine, during the 14th All India Invitational Karate Do Kobudo Championship held at Kannur District of Kerala, on January 10 and 11, 2004.
The felicitation and honour bestowed on Narayan did surprise the unassuming man, who, in his own words, feels that there is a long way for him to go to make a mark of sorts. But now, a beginning has been made and his services recognised. From now on, it will be an upward graph that will mark his career growth.
Narayan, for all the time that he can devote away from his workplace, conducts classes for an hour-and-a-half twice a week at three different venues: at VLS Vidyanagar School (Tuesday's/Friday's); Goodwill Apartments basement, Chandra Layout (on Monday's/Wednesday's) and Coconut Garden, Nagarbhavi (on Thursday's/Saturday's).
For someone who has done well at the State and National level for himself, the crowning moment was the stint under Grandmaster Gamini Soyuso, way back in 1992, when he earned his black-belt. Since then, it has been a single-minded role of a teacher, and the likes of Sahana S., Kailash S. and Kiran, all medallists at the National level in kumite (Shorin Ryu style of Karate), along with a host of others will vouch for their guru's dedication and commitment.
Good luck to Narayan and his bunch of young wards.
