Simply glorious

Gloriosa is one of the easiest plants to raise

GLORIOSA IS also called the Glory Lily. It belongs to the genus Liliaceae and is an extraordinary plant with strange, attractive flowers.

It is one of the easiest plants to raise and grows from tubers.

Plant one tuber to a medium-sized pot. Growth is observed in about two weeks time.

Being vigorous climbers, it is better to put in bamboo stakes in the pot, or place the pot near a trellis. Once growth is established, the pot may be placed in a larger one or put into the ground.

A sunny position and adequate watering will soon bring on six-petalled flowers - large lily-like reddish orange and yellow flowers, twisted, spiky and heavily pollinated. The petals at first are inverted and become upright on blooming. These exotic flowers will stand out in any garden, against their own backdrop of narrow bright green leaves.

The tubers may be dug up and stored dry after the flowering is over. They may be replanted after a gap of three months.

The flowers will also seed, though sprouting is a longer process.

The beauty of the Gloriosa is evident in three varieties - Gloriosa rothschildiana - a strong climber with orange and yellow flowers, three inches in size, tipped with crimson.

G. simplex - a medium-sized climber with two-inch flowers, broad-petalled in orange and yellow.

G. superba - medium-sized climber, large red flowers, reflex and wavy.
