Lead, kindly LIGHT

Light up your home in more interesting ways than one. And there is plenty to try out from in the city, finds out RADHIKA GARG.

CHANGING THE lighting in a home is one of the simplest and most effective ways to give it a new and happy feel. It plays a very vital role in designing the home. The interiors of a home can be altered and improved by a skilful play of natural and artificial lighting.

Natural light coming in from the North is supposedly not harsh but very soothing, as the heat gain is lesser from this side, and the light has no glare. So, one should create spaces in the house where maximum natural light is availed. Other parts of the house can be taken care by artificial lighting. Just as windows are planned for natural light and views, well-placed lamps can provide adequate artificial lighting .

According to Mr. Ranjith of Maverick Lighting, "Artificial lighting which affects billions of people has undergone a transformation from a simple incandescent bulb to nearly every lamp requiring a ballast or a transformer. Yes, the lamp and lighting industry has literally exploded with innovation since a century ago when people used to be delighted by bare electrical bulbs, which were both a source of light and decoration."

Today, more than ever fashion and function have come together to create decorative table lamps, floor lamps and chandeliers, which do much more than simply illuminating- they create an ambience. Says, Mr. Arun Lobo, Interior Designer, Lighting should be such that it livens up the whole place. It should highlight the qualities of a room; light up the paintings and the curios and at the same time should not be so strong that it makes people sitting in the room uncomfortable."

There are three basic types of lighting that work together to illuminate a house-general, task and accent. General lighting provides overall illumination. Task lighting helps one perform specific tasks like reading, cooking; paperwork etc and accent lighting adds drama to a room by creating decorative interest. A good lighting plan combines all the three types of lighting in an area .

The market trends in modern lighting are getting bolder day by day . Lamps come in a variety of shades and shapes with decorative trims in jute, paper, glass beads and dry flowers, which have replaced the old designs. Halogen based lights are in vogue and so are satin and matte finishes in the trends of fixtures. Lampshades are no longer spherical or square but come in fanciful shapes and colours. Subtle, anti-glare type of lights is the new mantra among the people who can afford it. Shops like Jos Electricals and Electrical Sales Corporation have started a completely different section for professionally designed lighting solutions.

Formerly, a design wing of Jos Lighting, the Advanced Lighting Concepts, has branched out as a requirement-specific lighting solution provider.

They provide mid to high-end holistic solutions with new concepts such as light pollution control (controlling light spillage while illuminating an exterior), visual comfort (glare protection, minimizing harsh lighting) and furthering lighting control to extend to "mood lighting" (using light to create an ambience, mood or dramatic effect) . Qualitative lighting as opposed to quantitative lighting is what is the present day by-word.

Some of the top end showrooms in the city like Dazzle the diamond section at Alapatt arcade have used these modern lighting concepts just as some of the some heritage sites.

So the archaic styles in lighting has given way to an almost dramatic change where it has been elevated to a medium of visual art.
