IS CHENNAI going the digital way? If one goes by the mushrooming internet cafes and hi-tech parlours, it seems to be catching up with the other cities.
Video chatting, video conferencing, multi-player, multi-city-on-line gaming, personalised music, digital theatre, digital photo imaging, virtual office and seamless surfing are now a reality with Reliance Infocomm opening its broadband centres in Chennai.
Actress Abirami of "Virumaandi" fame was there at the Reliance broadband centre in Anna Nagar recently. She took centre-stage as the cameras got whirring. "I am catching up with computers and the internet. Such outlets will go a long way in meeting the aspirations of people," said the actress. For once, Abirami was not facing the arc lights but was before hi-tech web cameras and communicating digitally with officials Vivek Hari Narain and Sudeep Jain. Bob Dexter, circle head, Reliance Web Stores, Tamil Nadu, and Raja Vaidyanathan, chief operating officer, Tamil Nadu, were at hand explaining the salient features of the range of facilities provided at these outlets.
If actress Abirami was the cynosure at Anna Nagar, it was "Five Star" Kaniha who lit the traditional lamp at the Parry's Corner outlet. Wrapping up three functions in a day, yet another centre was opened at TTK Road, Alwarpet. Chief guests Venu Srinivasan and Sri Jayendra Saraswati of Kanchi Kamakoti Math declared open the third broadband centre.
After surfing, game-box, chatting, conferencing under one roof, what next? Going home back to the basics. In about two months time, Reliance is planning make a foray into landline services, hi-speed data and video transmission facilities.
