Elegant fashion statements

The all-season saree with detailed artwork, casual pants and a hot red beadwork kurta stood out

A CLUTCH of elegantly dressed girls set the ramp on fire at `Ecstasy 2004', the inter-collegiate meet organised by Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science for Women.

But, they were not merely making a fashion statement; they meant business.

The lasses from the PSGR Krishnammal College for Women chose `Scent of Summer' as their theme and summery shades like sky blue, white and purple reigned supreme in their collection.

The all-season saree with detailed artwork, casual pants and a hot red beadwork kurta stood out.

The psychedelic lights and the ramp that extended on either side of the stage provided the ideal setting for the evening show. Smita D Patel of Dissoni Event Management and K Neeraj, a former model, judged the show.

When they asked a participant what the essential element in their show was, she replied: Saree. But, the judges disagreed. "It was your smile," they said in all seriousness.

The team from Park Engineering College tried to present variety. Their creations were a judicious mix of formal and casual wear.

A garment embossed with writing and charts, sported by a boy in this group, attracted much attention. He told the judges that in this era of globalisation, he had tried to combine the best of modern and traditional wear.

But, it was the boys of Sri Ramakrishna College of Engineering who stole the show. They ascended the stage with the traditional dhoti and pyjama.

And, changed in a jiffy. Appreciating , the judges said: "You have touched all styles and facets of clothing."

Neeraj later explained: "They presented a lot of variety and did the cycling sequence professionally. This is how models prepare for shows. The group was confident and spontaneous in its response."

Attire, grace and style were the criterion for assessing winners.

Both teams have been participating in fashion shows for sometime now, and this experience showed in their choice of clothing.

"The creations have to be something that people normally wear. So, we did not go overboard," remarked B Sakthipriya of PSGR Krishnammal College for Women.

Her team restricted their time on the stage to just five minutes.

On the other hand, the team from Sri Ramakrishna College of Engineering utilised the time allotted to them completely to showcase the `F-men of this era'.

"Outfits form the backbone of fashion shows. So, we designed ours. Sequencing, style and cat-walking are also important," observed Ronak H Kaneria of the college.
