PANDIT MADHAV Gudi hails from the illustrious city of Dharwad, which has produced distinguished stalwarts such as Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, Gangubai Hangal, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Kumar Gandharva, and Pandit Basavraj Rajguru. Born into a family of keertankaras and harikatha (devotional) musicians, Madhav Gudi was introduced to music at a very early age. He received his initial training from the great maestro of Gwalior gharana, Pandit Basavaraj Rajguru.
Interestingly, after a couple of years had passed by, Pandit Rajguru began to feel that Gudi's voice timbre was sounding like that of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, and advised him that he should train under Joshi's guidance.
With this, a new chapter began in Madhav Gudi's life. A guru-shishya bond that lasted well over 25 years. Madhav Gudi has toured extensively all over India and has performed with Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in several different centres in India and overseas. Among several accolades that he has received is the prestigious Sangeeta Nritya Akademy award from the government of Karnataka.
This trusted disciple of Joshi, who is the richest source of knowledge about the music, life, and times of the Kirana Gharana maestro, is turning 60. On the occasion, he will be felicitated by Pandit Madhav Gudi Felicitation Committee on February 7, 6 p.m.. The felicitation will be followed by a vocal recital by Pandit Madhav Gudi himself. The venue for this programme is Gayana Samaja, K.R. Road, and admission is free.
