IF YOU feel like savouring a fiery bhelpuri or paani puri on a wintry night, you should be heading straight for Bombay House, a new chaat oulet on Church Street. And this is the place to head for again if you are looking for golla, an ice-lolly sold on the beaches of Mumbai.
Done up in a shade of vibrant red, this vegetarian restaurant offers a "wholesome chaat experience" to the cosmopolitan Bangloreans. "We don't treat our patrons like customers, but like guests," says the affable Sunil Kumar who oversees the operations at the restaurant. "We maintain a sparkling clean kitchen and high levels of hygiene, and all our personnel are trained," he emphasises, pointing to a chef wearing gloves. That's a point to note, considering that the lack of hygiene is the bane of most chaat places. Apart from the regular chaat items such as ragda pattis and chole bature, there are also short eats such as grilled sandwiches and the rather unusual hari puri with dum aloo. The must-try item on the menu is the traditional Maharashtrian batata wada. The golla too has already made its mark in Bangalore. You have to queue up to get your quota!
If you have a sweet tooth, you can take your pick from the traditional Sindhi meher ka ladoo to the delectable Bangla mishti doi, ras kadam, and indrani. If you are looking for munchies, the chewdas would be a good pick. Do not forget to sample some makai chewda and the famous Gujju snack, dhokla.
On Sunday afternoons, the restaurant also offers a Sindhi/Gujrathi brunch. And there is a paanwala right there too, who will make you a paan just the way you want.
"Sometimes our guests drop in here before dinner. They snack here and go elsewhere for dinner," says Kumar. One can spot here both bunches of noisy college kids and well-heeled elderly women out on lunch. Well, the whole world loves chaat, doesn't it?
