Wah Shakeel!

A poet's journey began at a recent ghazal concert when he released his first collection, `Sonnet-The Poem'

JASVINDER SINGH'S ghazal mehfil at Amrutha Castle, the other day was an experience imbued with good-time upbeat spirit.
A progeny of well-known music director Kuldeep Singh, ghazal nawaaz Jasvinder's silky-smooth voice wafted through the huge hall and flooded all with just one wish: that he should come and play again.
The poetry in his songs was even more affective. Twenty-three year old Shakeel Ahmed has shown commendable maturity in penning those easy on ear couplets that are ripe with romance and moving emotions.
The writings reflect the sensibility of a man who has experienced time in all its forms, perceived many seasons of life, loved and even lost it - yet has unflinching faith in the beauty of love. It is admirable that a twenty-something can make such sublime poetry with eloquence typical of a seasoned shayar.
The musical evening - Ghazal-E-Shaam - took off an hour late but the wait was well worth, and those in attendance were rightly rewarded by an absorbing warm-up session of sher-o-shayaari. Jasvinder struck instant rapport with the crowd as he took stage and began crooning.
The audience immersed themselves in the honeyed melodies of love and romance, occasionally requesting an encore, and sprinkling a Wah Wah! The appreciation was implied more at Shakeel for his thoroughly likeable sonnets, which were set to music by Jasvinder's father, Kuldeep Singh.
Trained by Urdu adab's well-known custodian, Ustaad Mahzar Javaad Akhtar, Shakeel paid a befitting tribute when he dedicated his first album - Sonnet-The Poem to his guru. "It is a great occasion for me," he said choking with emotion.
Towards the later part of the evening, as Jasvinder deviated to Punjabi folk from ghazals, the audience lapped it up with great delight; a few nearly went footloose. But the most memorable part of the evening was the verses, which kept coming back long after one left the venue.
