Classics from Karnataka
REMEMBER THE 1986 classic tele serial, Malgudi Days based on R.K. Narayan's works directed by Shankar Nag? With Shankar Nag's untimely demise, the popular serial came to a halt. But now, brother Anant Nag who played the lead role is reviving the project, thanks to producer T.S. Narasimhan.
According to the producer, Nag wrote the screenplay for Man Eater of Malugudi way back in 1993 and won the appreciation of R.K. Narayan. Unfortunately, the work could not progress due to various reasons. Now he has roped in Kutty fame Janaki Viswanathan to write the episodic screenplay and Kavitha Lankesh to direct the serial.
Anant Nag plays the lead character Nagaraj with Prakash Raj as Vasu. Tara plays Nag's wife while Nandita Das is approached to play Rangi. The Man Eater of Malugudi will be made into a 26-episode serial as well as a feature film simultaneously.
The movie format is meant for commercial release and for the festival circuit in India and abroad, with an eye on the Oscars.
Meanwhile, maverick Upendra is planning the Kannada version of Sarath Chandra Chatterjee's classic Devadas with wife Priyanka Trivedi playing Paro. Ramya Krishnan is expected to play Chandramukhi. Come October, it will be the season of classics from Karnataka.
