BLUE JEANS and white shirt, her dress conveyed a lot about who she really was. For that was VJ Kim in nutshell: cool, casual and comfortable, with a love song on her lips and signing Valentine's Day messages in the streets of Hyderabad.
But Kim was always not like that. Seventeen years ago, she was Komila Jagtiani in Mumbai - a normal schoolgirl in well-oiled, red-ribboned hair, reticent and aloof but with a pair of sparkling eyes that were remarkably mischievous. Till she went to Canada and a name-change followed.
It almost brought a sea change in her persona, - she enrolled in the O'Neill Collegiate and Vocational school, developed confidence, attained proficiency in 15-forms of dance, dramatics and theatre and other extra-curricular activities. "I had almost begun to look like a Canadian, and speak like one. I was even winning prizes in Canadian beauty pageants with ease and had started to accept the place as my home," Kim recollects, adding - "till I was reminded of my roots when I won the Miss India-Canada title in 1999."
The title gave her a ticket to participate in Miss India-worldwide. "A prize in the contest was a visit to India which was awarded to me." The real story begins here.
On a vacation to her place of birth in 2000, an encounter with a relative led her to Channel [V]'s-Khar office in suburban Mumbai. "They said someone recommended my name for a VJ. Till today I have no clue about who the person was," she laughs. The first visit to the music channel's office is committed to Kim's memory.
"Canada does not have a VJ, there are only presenters and anchors. I had no clue of what I would be asked in the interview but decided to give it a shot ." Although Kim felt the audition was awful, and she would never get the job because of her "peculiar looks", destiny had different plans earmarked for her.
A fabulous offer from Channel [V] came by, the result of which is that she has become a household name today. A hugely successful VJ, Kim currently anchors four exciting shows - Club [V], Jumpstart, Very [V] and PO [V].
The secret of her svelte silhouette, she maintains, is a daily diet of dance, running and sports. Kim is learning her 16th dance form, Kathak. "This is my first lesson in Indian dance, and it feels great. It is fulfilling at the same time energising, like the kind of creative energy theatre used to give me in Canada," says the self-confessed `dance-holic'.
The bubbly anchor regrets not being able to devote as much time to theatre, which is her second passion following dance. "I am however compensating it with books." Well-read Kim has an eclectic taste in books - the latest one that has engrossed her attention is Dude, Where's My Country, a spoof on incidents related to 9/11 and a take on American imperialism. What more, now she says she wants to get instructed in psychology.
Obviously, there's more to Kim than meets the eye.
