In a new realm

"Rudraksh", a film by Mani Shankar, is a synthesis of spiritualism and science

BY HINDI film standards Rudraksh, releasing tomorrow, is in a new genre - one which integrates the science of spiritualism in an engrossing dramatic format. And its director Mani Shankar says, "it will be a phenomenal surreal treat to the eyes - a brand new film experience." Coming from Mani Shankar, who heralded cinema of his own genre with 16 December - techno thrillers with complex scripts and technical wizardry (digital and special effects), the visual fabric of the film is certainly different.

As Mani Shankar says: Most of Indian cinema (be it romantic, underworld or action) has got visually typecast. In cinema the emotional fabric is the same - audiences need them. So what can change is the visual and it is here that we have made a major departure." In a line Mani Shankar describes Rudraksh as an "action-emotional film with a strong philosophical bias." The film stars Sanjay Dutt (who is well versed in Sanskrit and English), Suniel Shetty (as the rakshas), Bipasha Basu (the scientist) and Isha Koppikar.

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have scored music for this film with mind-boggling graphics produced by Nitin Manmohan and Sohail Maklai. Mani Shankar does not believe in spoon-feeding the audience. "Today there is a thinking audience and I want to make the audience come feeling a little intelligent." Whether Rudraksh will work its way up to the BO is to be seen.
