Chords & Notes

Ravindra Sangeetham

HMV, Rs. 80.00

This double cassette pack focuses on the early phase of Ravindran's career. Making his debut in Malayalam films with the very popular `Tharake mizhiethallil... ' (Choola) in 1979, it was not an easy trek to the top for this extremely persistent and talented music director. Ravindran broke new ground with some refreshingly new trends in films like `Tharattu,' `Thenum Vayambum,' `Druvasangamam,' and `Swarna Pakshikal.' There was no looking back for him after this. This album includes songs from Ravindran's fledgling phase (1981-1983), where the attempt to establish a style of his own is so very evident. Included with some of the eternal favourites like `Thenum Vayumbum... ,' `Ezhu Swarangalum... ' (Chiriyo Chiri), `Ragangale Mohangale... ' (Tharattu), `Ottakambi Naadham... ' `Leela thilakam... ' (Prashnam Gurutharam) `Rithumathiyay... ' (Mazhanilavu) and `Ponpulari... ' (Ithiripoove Chuvannapoove) are some less popular ones like `Manasa Devi... ' (Dhruva Sangamam) or `Manjani konna... ' (Adyathe Anuragam). The quality of the recordings is poor, but a treasure for the avid Ravindran fan.

Hamsa Vinodini

Jeesa Creations, Rs. 50.00

In these days, when popular music is all about remixes and gross Western imitations, this album may seem an aberration. K. Veeramani, a schoolteacher based at Kottayam, gives life to some of the traditional songs, set to Indian classical ragas. One of them, `Veena Vadhi... ' in Hamsa Vinodini, is Veeramani's own composition. There are other tracks by legendary composers like Tyagaraja, Purandaradasa, Muthiah Bhagavathar, Deekshitar and Subramania Bharatiyar.

Thouheedoli Crescendo, Rs. 45.00

To coincide with the Id festival, Crescendo has come out with their in house production of Mappilapattukal. Nine songs by Afsal, Kannur Sherif, Rahna and Sindhu Premkumar, instil the spirit of the festival. The lyrics are by Bappu Velliparambu and music by Ibnu Siraj.
