Toning up kids' latent talent

In the space-age where the world has been reduced to a global village, a person has to be a good communicator and a go-getter if he or she wants to be successful in life. A child may be good at studies but that is not enough, he/she should be able to transfer the knowledge gained to others who could benefit from it. Unfortunately, acquiring bookish knowledge alone does not help a child in coming out of its shell. The District Interact Meet of RI District 3020 organised by the Rotary Club of Visakhapatnam Central on Sunday brought out the latent talent among the children. The 125 children from nine schools of Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle and Tuni who had participated in the debate on the topic 'Dare to dream' brought out promising orators. The few participants, who volunteered to address the gathering on the topic, inspired some more children to shed their inhibitions and speak in front of the mike.Sanjana of Siva Sivani School, Marripalem, impressed the gathering with her spirited extempore speech. Relating from her experience, she disclosed how she goaded her maid-servant to have an ambition in life and work towards achieving it while trying to overcome the obstacles which lay in her path. She recalled the true story of Sudha Chandran of 'Mayuri' fame who overcame her physical handicap with steadfast determination and became a dancer and film personality.Mrinmayee and Anupriya Sengupta of Visakha Valley School, Vivek Rao of Nalanda Talent School, Spoorthi (SSS), Bhargavi (VVS), Jhansi Lakshmi (KNRN School, Anakapalle), ASD Bhavani , K. Revathi (Z.P. High School, Tuni), B. Maanasa (SSS), and K. Archana (SSS) were among the others who not only 'dared to dream' but also disclose it to others. In the poster-painting contest on the theme 'harmony', 54 students participated. P. Priyanka of JMJ English Medium High School, Anakapalle, was the District Interact Representative.''The objective of Interact Club is to make the members partners in service and prepare future leaders. There are 160 Interact Clubs in Rotary International District 3020. The Interact Club members who are in the age group of 14 to 18 years, coordinate in Pulse Polio Immunisation programmes and in organising door-to-door campaigns for various social causes,'' says K. Balajagannadha Rao, district chairman, Interact.Earlier, in the inaugural session, Rear Admiral, A.K. Kalra, Project Director, Ship Building Centre, delivered the keynote address. The Rotary District Governor, D.V. Raju, was the chief guest. The host club president, Usha Reddy, chairperson, Nandini Sengupta, and the secretary, Sunita Mansukhani, attended.
