Tom Alter sets the stage with `Maulana' this weekend
|
THERE IS more to Tom Alter than playing wicked Britishers speaking atrocious Hindi - Alter, incidentally, speaks perfect Hindi. The city gets a chance to see the seasoned actor on stage in Maulana on February 21 at 7 pm at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Produced by Pierrot's Troupe, the play is a solo act by Alter. The play uses Maulana Azad dictating notes to Humayun Kabir for his book India Wins Freedom as a starting point.
Kabir in his foreword to India Wins Freedom describes Maulana as a "wonderful conversationalist." This is apparent in the play as Maulana digresses in his dictation to pontificate on a whole lot of apolitical issues as varied as tea and Taj Mahal, music and Mecca and cigarettes and Cheeta Khan.
The narrative includes numerous entertaining anecdotes and memoirs characterising his personality and life. Maulana's relationship with Gandhi, Nehru, Jinnah and Patel also come up for review. The play is written and directed by Dr M. Sayeed Alam a veteran of several wittily observant comedies like Ghalib in New Delhi, Cut... Cut... Cut... and Blue Line Hazir Ho. Passes (Rs 1,000, Rs 500, Rs 250 and Rs 100) are available at A.A. Husain, Ratnadeep, Walden, Music World and Cova. For further details, call 24567087, 9849273706, 37777177.
