No speed-breakers

Catch the spirit of motor racing at Speed, the new pub at Hotel Grand Orient

DRIVING AND drinking should never go together, barring one exception though. They can (go together) at Speed, the newly-launched theme pub at Hotel Grand Orient. Called the "high octane pub", Speed is built around the sport of motor racing.

True to its positioning, the pub is filled with images from the sport. The bar has as its backdrop an actual-size replica of a 2003 Ferrari FI car. On a giant screen are played Grand Prix matches. When the racing season is on, matches will be telecast live. An LCD monitor and a small camera stare at you from under the glass tops of your tables.

The interiors are colourful without being loud. The main area with its well-upholstered seats is in keeping with the colour schemes in a Mercedes, and a "private space" is patterned after those of a BMW. Tyres encircle the legs of the liquor-and-food stands. Steering wheels dot the heavily carpeted floor. As people belly up to the bar counter, sitting on gleaming bar stools, they cannot miss the chequered colour patterns, brought alive by generous lighting.

The racing metaphors spill over into the beverages as well. Cocktails bear names like Injured, Technical Failure, Damaged Car and Accident; and Mocktails come with names like Super Lap, Final Lap and Race By Race. You can also order Pitshop Beer, Silverstone Shots (tequila), Wheels (vodka with a dash of mint syrup and lemon juice), Pre-race Warm-up and other drinks.

And they (racing metaphors) fill up the plates too - Chicken 65km/ hour, Fried AMG Prawns, Fried GT-R Fish, Tandoor Hot Lap Chicken, Aston Martin Sheek Kebab, Tandoor Hot Lap Chicken and so on.

The bar is open from 6.00 p.m. to 11.30 p.m.

PRINCE FREDERICK
