A to Zee... Awards galore
|
Everyone who was anyone with a stake in the Hindi film business shifted base to Dubai this week for the Zee Cine Awards extravaganza. Indians rubbed shoulders with Pakistanis with perfect bonhomie. It was the B-word - Bollywood - that united them all, says SANGEETA BAROOAH PISHAROTY giving a ringside view.

THINK OF a turf where India and Pakistan mingle at ease with no malice and the name that floats to the top is without doubt, Bollywood films. Glimpses of this phenomenon were amply on show at the Seventh Zee Cine Awards held for the first time in Dubai this past week. Right from the word go, parallel to the focus on rewarding the best in the tinsel town in the year gone by, the organisers' concentration zeroed in on a planned Indo-Pak agenda - an attempt at a weave-in job of people to people contact.
"We have a special reason to bring the Zee Cine Awards to this city. Apart from the popularity of our Bollywood stars here, it can also be a common ground where people from India and Pakistan could enjoy the show together," Zee Network CEO Subhash Chandra Goel declared in the presence of thousands of Dubai-based Indian and Pakistani expats at the Dubai Media City auditorium on the night of February 26 along with many nationals from both the countries who had flown down to the desert city specially for the event. Side by side with popular Indian stars like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta, Shilpa Shetty, Lara Dutta, Juhi Chawla, Shekhar Suman and others, were Pakistani performers like Reema Khan, stand-up comedian Omar Sharief, Javed Sheikh and Resham, sharing a fabulous stage. And, at regular intervals were memorised lines by the hosts Javed Jaferi, Karan Johar, Juhi Chawla, Katrina Kaif, Shilpa Shetty and John Abraham: Films are the common thread that can bind the neighbours. Omar Sharief, who gave the huge gathering - including Big B Amitabh Bachchan - no break between laughs, also gave feelers to the Indian cricketers to visit Pakistan: "Come to the country of the same roots. We shall give them so much love and care that some of you might decide to stay back in Pakistan." And the crowd roared amidst deafening applause. Shekhar Suman, though, could not be stopped from his "feel good factor" and "India Shining" jokes.
Carrying on the night with the awards ceremony, the film that cleaned up the most popular awards was "Koi... Mil Gaya". Hrithik Roshan bagged the Best Actor award, Rakesh Roshan the Best Director award, Digital Art Media got it for Best Special Effects, Ganesh Hegde for Best Choreography - all for "Koi... Mil Gaya". It also got the Best film award. Urmila Matondkar, who picked up the Best Actress award for Ramgopal Verma's "Bhoot" took home a blood red Chevrolet along with a separate car for Hrithik. Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta bagged the Best Superstar of the Year awards. Though Chandraprakash Dwivedi's "Pinjar" collected quite a few awards, they were, in comparison, not the coveted ones, except the one to Amrita Pritam for Best Story. The score "Idhar Chala..." from "Koi... Mil Gaya" was given the Best Song Award. Surprisingly, "Baghban" could get only one award in the list of 32 categories.
In between breaks from the awards, Salman Khan squeezed in a 4.5 lakh Dirham cheque as auction money for a Zee Cine Award trophy to be offered as donation for Mumbai based old people's home, St. Anthony's.
Packed with an exciting mix of dance, mimicry, jokes, speeches and emotional moments for awardees besides the heady presence of dozens of celebrities from filmdom, the show, being the first such film award event to be pulled out of India so far, could be called a success, if behind-the-scene chaos regarding management of the 40 winners of the Zee Network's public awards could be taken in context. Being flown in as guests of the channel, they ended up in various hotels of Dubai without anyone to guide them and finally heckling into the event venue, fuming and grumbling.
Perhaps its is time for Goel and company to first think about people and Zee contact in his home country before embarking on the clichéd agenda of "people-to-people contact" between India and Pakistan.
