SARASA SRINIVASAN has a response to Sharda's query on a recipe with horse gram: Soak horse gram in hot water overnight and then pressure-cook and keep it aside. It can be added to any vegetable as a side dish. The best suited is tapioca (aalvaali in Tamil and marakkizhangu in Malayalam). Cook the desired vegetable with the already cooked horse gram adding turmeric powder and salt. Make a paste with grated coconut, green chillies, and cumin seed. Add this paste to the cooked curry. Add little water and boil it for two minutes. Add a few curry leaves. Simmer it with mustard and black gram dal. If desired, grated coconut, fried in oil can be added. For those who want a little sweetness, a little jaggery can be added.
* Priya wanted to know where in Chennai she could get apple cider vinegar. Sandhya and Shreekant say that they have just opened a health food shop in Besant Nagar called Econut (shop #3, E-34, 1st floor, 2nd Avenue, Besant Nagar (above SBI), tel: 24919592) where they stock apple cider vinegar besides organic rice, wheat, pulses and a host of other products.
