The event that was...

The fiasco over seat allocation to Amitabh Bachchan at the Zee Cine Awards event in Dubai this past week was not the only exciting bit at the awards do. SANGEETA BAROOAH PISHAROTY rolls out some more crumbs and specks.

IF IT can be compared, the worst treated were the 40 winners of the Zee TV's awards campaign, `Gali gali mein shor hai, Zee Cine Awards ka zor hai'. Flown into Dubai free of charges, the hotels they were asked to report denied them accommodation saying they were already full. After a lot of heckling could they prevail upon hotel officials. And, when they reached the event venue at the Dubai Media City auditorium, there were no passes! Those with cell phone connections were seen making frantic calls to the concerned personnel of Zee TV in Mumbai. A costly price for a free ticket, all of them would agree!
WITH ABOUT 30 journalists specially flown in from Delhi and Mumbai for the event to the desert city, there was no official briefing. The sole press conference scheduled for February 26 morning never happened. Those scribes used to having a ringside view of events they report about, were amazed to find their seats in the last row of the auditorium. Well, for once, it was a rare occasion to see the larger-than-life actor and actresses of Bollywood in miniature forms.
WHAT MOST Juhi Chawla's fans did not know till the Zee Cine Awards night was that she has a great voice. Taking even the film fraternity by surprise - most amazed was perhaps Sushmita Sen with a shocked expression on her face alongside Jayaprada - Juhi beautifully lived up to the friendly challenge thrown in by co-compere Karan Johar by crooning a few lines of the title song of "Kal Ho Naa Ho". Winning applause from the audience, she stood in contrast with Shah Rukh Khan's Rs. one crore worth disastrous attempt at singing a few couplets from the same song.
THE AWARDS function has added another star to superb director Karan Johar - that of a fabulous compere. For that marvellous job, he can very well be forgiven for taking over the show from the organisers to bring in his friends Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Priety Zinta and Juhi Chawla on the same platform, all in honour of father Yash Johar who bagged the Lifetime Achievement Award. IF APPLAUSE is some way of gauging one's popularity, then the clear winners at the Zee Cine Awards extravaganza were Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha. No sooner did the huge screens put up inside the auditorium focussed on Big B and Rekha, the audience roar went louder. The next in line were the three Khans of course - Shah Rukh, Salman and Saif.
AND, NOW it is official that Aishwarya Rai has a `Rai' in her life these days. Amidst the presence of Suresh Oberoi and his wife and not to miss out on a silent Salman Khan, Juhi Chawla declared from the stage, humorously of course, that Ash's new `Rai' in life is none other than Vivek Obe-`rai'!
GUESS WHO was by the side of Shahid Kapur who bagged the Best Male Newcomer Award? Kareena Kapoor.
TRUST THIS to happen. Salman Khan, who did an auction of a Zee Cine Award trophy to raise money for an old people's home in Mumbai, for a day thought he had sold it off for a whopping 1,45,000 dirhams. A local daily next day quoted the family of the Indian jeweller who pledged the amount, that they returned the award as they can't afford the price!
