Garimella Sriama Murthy being felicitated by Vankayala Narasimha Murthy, M. Venkata Rao, and others.
Sangeetha Kalaa Samithi, a popular association serving the cause of classical music and the artistes in and around Visakhapatnam, celebrated Thyagaraja Aaradhanotsavam coinciding with its 29th anniversary last month in the premises of Sri Sadguru Sriramadootha Mandiram. A procession comprising most of the local artistes carrying the portrait of the Vaggeyakara along with Srirama Panchayathanam round the temple, puja and pancharatna krithi seva followed by short-duration recitals of the Thyagaraja compositions from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. marked the day long aaradhana. Noted Gandhian, freedom-fighter and an octogenarian, Garimella Sriramamurthy who was an active member of the Sangeetha Mitra Brindam (the first body which started organising music concerts in the port city), a founder-member and secretary of the Bharati Gaana Sabha was felicitated at the annual day celebration in the evening by the samithi kulapathi, renowned mridangam vidwan and guru Vankayala Narasimham, and the chief guest and Director of AP Tourism Development Corporation, M. Venkata Rao. The samithi president, Susarla Suryanarayana Murthy, chaired the session. Later, prizes to the winners at the music competitions conducted earlier by the Samithi (regular annual feature) were distributed by the Kulapathi. While the secretary, noted mridangam vidwan, Vankayala Venkata Ramanamurthy, welcomed the gathering, Perala Bala Muralikrishna and Ch. Somasundara Rao compered the programme in turns. P. Subrahmanyam (Bablu) was the stage manager.
While Ch. Ramya Kiranmayi, disciple of noted guru, Ivaturi Vijayeswara Rao was the choice this year for the annual talent award instituted in memory of reputed connoisseur of music, Perala Lakshmana Rao, the following were winners of the first, second, third and consolation prizes (two each) in different age groups.
Vocal sub-juniors: K.S. Govinda & Samyukta, K.R. Rasagnya, P.V. Bhavya and G.V. Ushasri, K.S.T. Manasa and S.V.N. Ratnam, P. Pratyusha and C.N.Praneethi in that order.#Junior Boys and girls - vocal: B. Gowtham & Ch.R. Kiranmayi, C.C. Koushik, N. Chitra & V.N. Sameera, V. Dinakar, P.S.S. Soujanya & K.S. Maanasa, V.S. Manoj & J.L. Alekhya. S.L. Madhuri, N. Sri Vidya, S.S. Lavanya and M. Sairamya were also awarded consolation prizes.
Violin juniors: 1st - Ch.R. Kiranmayi, 2nd - K.T.M. Ramanujam and 3rd - Sriramya.
The evocative rendering of some select compositions, Alakalallalaadaga gani (Madhyamavathi), Vina naasagoniyunnanura (Pratapavaraali), Vaachaamagocharame (Kaikavasi), Sarasa saamadaana (Kapeenaaraayani) and Dorakuna Ituvantiseva (Bilahari) of Thyagaraja in good unison by K. Vandana, K. Sudharani, V. Sumana and R. Kusumakumari. GVS Raghuram on violin and M. Sridhar on mridangam provided excellent support. Ukkunagaram Ganasabha Secretary, M. Ramprasad's interesting commentary in between explaining the `Apoorva Sannivesaalu' envisioned by Thyagaraja as described in the lyrics made it all the more interesting. Ramanamurthy proposed a vote of thanks.
