Waterrrelief...

Strollers in Kadri park need not go thirsty anymore

WHAT STARTED as routine activity, the morning walk with a group of people in and around Kadri park area here has now become a full-fledged service activity, at least for a number of them. These residents, members of the Lions Club - Mangalore Kadri Hills, have also taken the initiative to take up various developmental activities for the area.

Mayor K. Diwakar recently dedicated one such major service activity of the Club: a purified chilled drinking water facility installed in Kadri park for the benefit of regulars who use the park. Krishna Avatar Jalan, businessman, has contributed a major share towards this project, for which he was honoured by B. Ramdas Rai, Governor, Lions District 324-D5.

Sujith Kumar M., Secretary of the Club, the Club came to being in October 2002 with R.K. Shetty as its of charter president. At present, it has 28 members with U. Venkatraya Nayak as the incumbent President. Most members of the fledgling Club are residents of areas adjoining Kadri, who frequent the park for their morning walk.

Noting that the Club had undertaken various service projects in and around Kadri area, including donation of materials to students of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Ashram School opposite Kadri Telephone Exchange, Mr. Kumar said the Club members were toying with the idea of the service project for long. The initial plan was to construct a public toilet on the park. However, the idea was dropped after Mr. Diwakar said there was a similar proposal under an Asia Development Band-assisted project.

The Club will carry out the upkeep of the water facility through an annual maintenance contract. Though the facility has been handed over to the Department of Horticulture under whose purview the park comes, the Club will take responsibility for its maintenance, Mr. Kumar said.
