Moti Mahal College of Hotel Management will soon be on the international map
|
Hotel Management has become a popular course in the port city that is known all over the country for its distinct cuisine.
THE PEOPLE of Dakshina Kannada are known for their success in the hotel industry. This industry, has not just flourished in this part of the State, but has also spread its wings to other parts of the state, and to other towns in the country. The Kamath hotels and Udupi hotels continue to attract customers in many parts of the country.
A course in hotel management was unheard of in the Port city a decade ago. Not many were aware of the potential and scope for a degree or diploma in hotel management. The Moti Mahal College of Hotel Management filled that vacuum in 1992, when it started offering a course in hotel management. Since then the college has come a long way to expand itself in to an academy, which is called the Motimahal Academy of Hospitality Education.
As the lifestyles of people have been undergoing tremendous changes, the concept of hospitality is also gaining prominence. Privatisation and globalisation have shrunk the world. The movement of people, including corporates and other professionals, from one part of the world to the other, has also increased. With this, the demand for decent, comfortable accommodation, healthy and tasty food at travel places, a high expectation on the hospitality front is gaining prominence.
The Moti Mahal College of Hotel Management in Mangalore has been adapting itself to changes to meet market demands. It has also been making efforts to ensure placement after the completion of their courses. According to its Principal, Deepika Kapoor, the college is on the verge of getting ISO 9001-2000 certification for its "total quality management system" from the American Quality Assessors International LLC, USA, shortly.
The American Quality Assessors (AQA) India Private Limited, functioning under the AQA International LLC, USA, which issues the said certification, has recommended the name of the Moti Mahal College of Hotel Management for the said certification, added Ms. Kapoor.
Once the college gets certification, it would be the first such college in Karnataka to get an ISO certification, and this would place the college on the international map. Only a few hotel management colleges in the country have got an ISO certification. The college is approved by the State Government and is affiliated to the Mangalore University. It is also a licensee of Educational Institute of the American Hotel and Lodging Association.
As per Ms. Kapoor, the college has a cent per cent placement record. The students who have passed out of the college have taken up employment in Canada, Australia, and the Gulf countries, besides reputed hotels in India.
The pass percentage of the students in all the courses is very good.
"We not only teach hotel management to our students but also teach them hospitality. Even if our students are not able to get employment in the hotel industry they should be able to fit in to other sectors that demand hospitality," she said. The college has a training and placement cell of its own. And the students are required to maintain high standards of discipline.
The philosophy of the college is to make the student able to make managerial decisions, to impart practical skills, and to cultivate professional attitude. The college offers masters in hotel management and tourism (MHM), a two-years PG programme, bachelor's degree in hospitality sciences, and one-and-half year's departmental specialisation.
The latter has been designed for the graduates interested to join the hospitality industry. Besides, it offers a three-year's diploma programme affiliated to the Educational Institute of American Hotel and Lodging Association.
Its titles are Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management and Catering Operations and Advanced Diploma in Food and Beverage Management and Operations.
The college also offers 18-month certificate courses in front office, food and beverage service, food and beverage production, and housekeeping.
The college insists that students should not use mobile phones, and also imposes a restriction on their driving till they complete their courses. The college has a good placement record, Ms. Kapoor said. It has bagged Udyog Excellence Award, 2002-2003.
It has also bagged the Jewel of India Award, 2002-2003, from the International Institute of Education Management.
