Roshni Nilaya, the exclusive school for social work, is one of the premier institutions

MANGALORE'S PASSION for the social sciences doesn't seem to fade at all. The spirit of social sciences has been kept alive by the various institutions in the city, despite the high demand for professional education. The social work school Roshni Nilaya is one of the premier institutions of the city. Affiliated to Mangalore University, the institute is committed to a scholarly study and professional practice of social work that promotes individual and institutional change.
The Institute was established in 1960 by the Society of the Daughters of Heart of Mary an international Catholic religious society founded in France in 1790. The Institute is situated on a sprawling six-acre campus at Valencia in Mangalore, and it provides a perfect ambience for students to develop socio-cultural awareness, and inculcates the essence of community development in them. The Institute takes up social work in the field of community development and the faculty and the students work with the community groups, government and voluntary agencies, and local community leaders to bring about the required changes in a given community, through the process of participatory planned change, opportunities to function as social activists, community organisers, personnel in the government departments, and in other voluntary organisations as co-ordinators of development projects and welfare agencies, managers and project holders of non-governmental organisations.
The special emphasis on medical and psychiatric social work and counselling has been the highlight of the work taken up by the school. It carves out career opportunities in hospitals, clinics, sanitaria, mental health institutions, counselling centres, child guidance centres, medical colleges, medical and psychiatric research organisations, community health centres, contributory health service programmes, public health programmes and social workers in de-addiction, counsellors in HIV\AIDS field, adoption, foster care, geriatric services, and counselling centre for children and youth.
Says the principal of the school, Jacintha D'Souza: "Social work has a never ending scope for those students who consider it as a mission of their lives, and it is false notion that social work never pays. In the recent times, there have been successful students who have made it into the corporate world by getting good perks and salaries and also recognition in the society."
She says "there is no field where an element of social work is not involved. Human resources development, personnel management, industrial relations, plants and factories, mines, central and state governments, transport, and many other fields have openings for those trained in social work."
As an added discipline, the Institute also has a full-fledged Criminology department, which imparts not just education on criminology but also extends a helping hand in the police work in the district.
There is immense scope for employment opportunities in prisons, social welfare departments, and also other departments of the state governments.
The recent trends in social work has also shown that there are large number of overseas opportunities waiting for those who can show good aptitude for social work, says senior faculty, Dr. Hilda Rayappan.
The expert views on social work has been supported amply by the fact that there are a number of social work schools in Mangalore and Dakshina Kannada, and now many colleges are enthusiastic to introduce the social sciences as part of their curriculum.
