Veejay Shruti introduces Gen-X to the world of politics and power in `The Big Vote'
|
WHAT HAS politics to do with Generation Next? Nothing, one would think, because the world of cool dudes, cooler wheels, coolest togs and icy cool mobiles seems far divorced from the world of khadi, Gandhi caps, wheeling and shady dealing, corruption and the unsightly scrabble for power.
Perky Shruti Seth, who is hosting The Big Vote on Channel V with fellow veejay Gaurav Kapur, begs to differ. The host of shows like Junglee Jukebox and First Day First Show, who was in the city to shoot with Punjab da Puttar, Bobby Deol minced no words when she said, "It is easy to criticise people in power. The question is who put them there? If I did not vote, the vote gets wasted and worse, misused. So if one is not willing to go out there and exercise one's fundamental right, then we have no right to criticise the government."
Describing The Big Vote as "a campaign to spread awareness," Shruti explains, "The responsibility lies with each of us. If we are unhappy with the government, it is because we have not put the right people in power. Channel V wants to inspire people to vote. It is human to listen to people on the same wavelength so there is more chance of young people taking notice of Channel V, which is all about the young at heart."
The modus operandi according to Shruti is "go to colleges and get the youth charged up to get the right people in power by exercising your vote. There is also a show on Channel V where panellists discuss the various aspects of the electoral process. The show is not about propaganda. It is not about `this party is good or that one is bad.' It is just to get the younger generation interested in voting. The show is not an election campaign, it is a campaign for voting."
Shruti comments that since "elections are a serious issue, it is being dealt with seriously."
From politics to films (some may say they are fairly closely related!), in her one year of veejaying, this graduate in economics and commerce from St Xavier's has met up with a host of film stars while anchoring the Bollywood-based shows. "People have a lot of preconceived notions about film stars. When you talk to them, you realise that they are just normal people."Shruti's favourite film stars include "Shah Rukh Khan who is intelligent and charming, Aftab Shivdasani is very warm, Ajay Devgan is intense and intriguing, Salman is cultured, a perfect gentleman and very good looking! Bryan Adams was very thoughtful and after the show thanked every member of the crew. It showed his humility and self-assurance."
Shruti is waiting with bated breath "for the day when I will get to interview Amitabh Bachchan. I am so in awe of the man, I am sure I would not be able to say a thing!" Hyderabad to Shruti brings memories of "the Veiled Rebecca at the Salarjung Museum. It is so beautiful." Shruti subscribes to the belief that "there is nothing like worthwhile or not worthwhile about a career - you should enjoy what you are doing." And future plans include nothing special, as "I believe in taking one day at a time!"
