Aware, but not active

Mahesh Dattani feels that the focus of the youngsters is elsewhere and not on politics

"I THINK Gen X is just as politically aware as the Seventies children. But not as politically active. I think the focus is definitely elsewhere, be it career or resolving personal issues or pursuing hobbies," says Mahesh Dattani, the well-known playwright.

Comparing the Seventies generation to the present, he says: "The biggest difference is that in the Seventies, the generation gap was as big a cause as poverty and deprivation. It spawned great Socialist movements and at the same time, tackled cross-generational conflicts."

But at the same time, Dattani would not want to dismiss the present generation as excessively self-obsessed. "It's just that their concerns may not result in action," he says.
