Chords & Notes

KATHA SHRI RAM KI

T-Series, Rs.35.

THE BEST part of the album is that it does not borrow tunes of Hindi film songs and try to fit narration of the birth of Lord Ram making it sound outlandish.

Sharma Bandhu in their music, song and pravachan try to be as close to the semi classical tunes in describing the birth, life and childhood activities, as possible. What makes the album interesting is careful selection of small paragraphs and the narration of their dialectic version from the Ramcharitmanas, Gitawali and Shri Ramadarbar Rachna in Hindi before the song starts. Hence, "Palna", "Badhai" and "Bal Leela" on side B, draw attention for both commentary and sonorous reasons, while Side A with "Jai Jai" and "Bhagya Pragat" is less euphonic.

Overall, a worth buy.

AAO MAIYYAJI TUMHEIN BHOG LAGAOON

T-Series, Rs.35

IN THIS season of worship, the T-Series sets of songs dedicated to Devi are timely, if not all melodious. Among them is this album In keeping with contemporary tastes - or what the agents of mass produced music feel are contemporary tastes - the songs are loud, rousing and dominated by plenty of percussion.

The lyrics for the most part are simple. The vocalist is Narendra Chanchal, while lyrics are by Kunwar Juneja, Surendra Pankaj and Namrata Narendra Chanchal. Known as Mata Ki Bheintein, these songs are sure to find takers as the trend of appreciating devotional offerings for the spirit behind them rather than for musicality is prevalent among city folk.

MONALISA SMILE

Sony Music, Rs.135.

MAYBE THE Indian palate has a different taste for music than the West, hence from Indian standards the album with a total of 15 compositions of songs and music does not actually enthral. Yet don't we say music has no barriers or language? Going by this, the title song by Seal "Secret Love" by Mandy Moore are touching sans good tunes. The catchiest of all is "Istanbul Not Constantinople" by The Trevor Horn orchestra, which is a foot-tapping number, followed by Rachel Portman's "Suites".

An average buy, otherwise.

THE VIOLIN LEGENDS

Sony Music, Rs.75

THIS ALBUM is for those who appreciate Western classical music, and of course for L. Subramaniam fans, as the violin wizard is the pivot of the presentation, that features his playing along with recordings of pieces he performed with the late violin maestros Yehudi Menuhin and Stephane Grapelli. There are classic pieces like Partita No. 3 in E Major of J.S. Bach, played by L. Subramaniam with Ravi Raj on the keyboard. Another striking composition is the opening piece on Side B, "Ambience". True to its name, it creates a beautiful musical atmosphere. This is performed on the violin by L. Subramaniam, Stephane Grapelli, with Mark Massey on the keyboard, Jerry Watts on the bass and Tom Rotella on the guitar.
