Begin a musical journey
BRHADDVANI, A Chennai-based non-profit organisation dedicated to research and training in Carnatic music, is commencing the process of selecting candidates for the next batch of the COMET (Correlated Objective Music Education and Training) programme, scheduled to begin in August.
COMET is a professional, three-year, full-time training programme in Carnatic music, provided free of cost to qualified students. Those interested in a first-hand knowledge of the programme specifics can attend a detailed presentation on April 11, at 10 a.m., at Brhaddvani. Prospective applicants can contact the centre in person for the application form and for information about the admission procedure.
It is essential that students enrolling for COMET have the aptitude to grasp the principles of Carnatic music. The comprehensive and rigorous course curriculum will help them build ability and confidence. They will also be equipped with the skills to enable them realise their talent in a contemporary world. The training serves as an invaluable foundation that can be applied to the learning and understanding of any form of music such as film, folk, jazz and Hindustani.
Brhaddhvani is also offering short-term courses for the benefit of students and performing artistes, at a moderate fee. Starting June, there are will courses in voice culture, manodharma sangeetham (ragam, talam, neraval and swaram), music training for dancers and musicians, training to perfect sruthi, sthanam and layam for young aspirants and specialised training for light music and playback singers. Music teachers in schools too can benefit from the summer crash courses which cover aspects such as effective teaching and optimal use of students' talent.
The courses for children will ground them in the fundamentals of Carnatic music. The centre's summer camp for school children is scheduled to start from the third week of April. Slokas, kolam and craftwork will be subjects covered.
Brahddhvani was founded in 1989 to revitalise Carnatic music within a global and contemporary context. Its integrative and interdisciplinary approach makes traditional Indian art forms accessible and relevant to modern culture.
