Cotton allure

Chic cottons are the highlight of the Weaver's Studio collection on show at Amethyst

SUMMER'S HERE — time to shove the crepes and polyesters to the back of the wardrobe and move those cottons forward. If you think cotton couture's faded and jaded, check out Amethyst's new collection from Weaver's Studio.

The accent is on fine cotton and tussar silk in solid colours. Simple block-printed borders and dupattas add a dash of colour to the deep hues of the kameezes. Separates come in cotton blends adding a stretchy seersucker feel to some of the fabrics. The loose weaves and light cotton are just right t6o beat the heat. The scarves and stoles are absolutely gorgeous, ideal to jazz up any outfit.

Weaver's Studio, based in Kolkata, works with more than 600 crafts persons to tap local talent and has been spinning saris, scarves and salwars for the past ten years both for the domestic and international market. This summer collection brings together traditional motifs and vivid colours, complementing them with contemporary cuts.

It's a top of the line collection all right, price-wise too. Stoles and scarves start from Rs. 890 and shoot all the way up to Rs. 6,000 for an elaborately kanta-worked silk one.

The kurtas are priced between Rs. 1,190 to Rs. 5,090, while complete sets cost about Rs. 4,000.

The lightweight khadi saris are woven in traditional patterns and start from Rs. 1,190. The colours are classily sober with simple borders and lovely pallus.

Other summer collections on display are Payal Jain's chikan-worked outfits, Sujit Mukherjee's latest line, Kimono's straight lines and simple cuts, Christina's light crepes and Madhu Jain's elaborately ethnic line.

The collections are on display at Amethyst, Sundar Mahal, Padmavati Road, Gopalapuram.
