Joy-filled steps

Glitters Mega Dance 2004 by children kept the audience in splits

"DO YOU know something?" asked Astha Chauhan. "The greatest thing in life is love. There are people who have so many things, but do not have love. Such people are poor."

"Ah. That's a platitude!" you may sneer. But it had a ring of freshness to it because a six-year-old uttered that line.

At `Glitters Mega Dance 2004,' organised by Millennians at the Music Academy this past weekend, the ordinary looked like the extraordinary. The reason: little children took centre stage at the three-hour programme.

Primarily a dance programme, it also had children speak profound words like the afore-mentioned, by way of introducing songs. A fashion show by them kept the audience in stitches. It did not matter that most of the children were stiff for the most part.

In a sequence (to the accompaniment of "Eh Mera Dil Hai") which combined ballroom dancing with acting skills, one boy tripped while trying to twirl his beloved, sending the audience into peals of laughter. The evening was full of pleasant faux pas as the children danced to hot-selling numbers such as Stand Up For The Champions, Pretty Woman, Let's Look To The Future, Time To Disco, One Love, Chori Chori, O Mera Babu Chail Chabela and Bardash Nahi Karsaktha.

The young team also performed a fusion dance, which had won for it the "Horlicks Activity 2003-04" award at Bangalore (900 teams participated), and a contemporary dance named "Endangered Species."

At the end of the show, Mansoor Ahmed, artistic director of Millennians, said, "I just want these children to enjoy shaking their legs. If the interest is there, perfection will be just round the corner."
