A rainbow of dreams

Sita Nandini. K takes a tour of the Konerus' castle of opulence.

A KALEIDOSCOPE of colors, a riot of earthen shades, a picture out of a rainbow. Yes, a house to match this feast for the eyes! The home of Kanchana and Koneru Satyanarayana in the heart of the city is all that an artist could ask for. A home with a blend of oriental east, Indian antiques and western ceramics, it finds one in awe at the sheer beauty of its creation.

In this newly renovated house, each and every room follows an exclusive colour code of its own. The entrance of the corridor, with its antique window post, gangalams with flowers, brass pot trolleys of yonder days ushers you in even as the statues of a band of south Indian musicians give a condescendant superiority feeling.

It's a pleasant surprise to find the plush English style drawing room in bright hues of blues.

This marble-floored room is done up meticulously with the colour code in mind. From the upholstery to the etchings on glass doors to the chimes to the bluish silver artefacts to the Australian ceramic dolls and to the ceiling lights, everything in the room complements each other in their unison blue.

Kanchana takes pride in the fact that she herself has supervised over the interior decoration and these colours reflect the couple's passion for bright colours.

The red room put into light their love for oriental reds especially with their collection of oriental souvenirs from across the globe brought during their various visits in the last 25 years. The pagoda house, which they remember fondly as one of their first collections, the ballet dancers, the Japanese dolls, mats - what not; it is a tribute to the orient.

No room resembles the other in terms decor or interior as care is taken to make the wall paint textures also different. The much warmer earthly tones in yellow of the family room are done with all kinds of nostalgic family heirlooms. The cute little sofa with its frilled posts was Kanchana's cot of childhood.

The cribs of their three children Harish, Havin and Nikkila make an impressive table with its new glass top. A room set in our desi and Rajasthani style, it is an ideal one to relax at the end of a long day!

The furniture basically in teak wood with intricate designs, The Tanjore and European paintings, collectors item - an original M.F.Hussain's Rajasthani girl, everything looks as if it has come out of a Sanjay Leela Bhansali's blockbuster. All these speak out the love of the couple for opulence, not to mention the relief work dressers and tables which leave one spell bound. The picturesque garden scene that intersperses the drawing rooms and dining area in the centre of the house is just an extension to the colour concept of the house.

The dining room, with its combination of pista greens and silver, sure, whets one's appetite for eyes and stomach more! Pink for girls and blue for boys is the key as far as kids bedroom is concerned, as the pink room is all that a girl could dream of! The bed, to the wardrobe, to the stuffed toys -- everything is well matched for a pink-cheeked teenager.

One rarely stumbles upon a house like this, where colours are given free reign, in this era of white marbles and off-white walls. This house with all its construction and decor in accordance with the Vaastu sastra is surely one of its kind in the city. Though given a free hand to decorate the house, beams Kanchana, all the family members have put in their little bit to make it into a colourful dream house.
