Just what's GATS

THE CREATION of GATS (General Agreement on Trade in Services) was one of the landmark achievements, of the Uruguay Round of talks between countries, whose results came into force in January 1995. The GATS for the first time extended internationally agreed rules and commitments into the rapidly growing areas of international trade and services. The central idea of GATS is that progressive liberalisation of trade in commercial services will promote economic growth in WTO member countries. Commercial services are as diverse as entertainment, e-commerce and education. Commercial presence of universities is just one of the types of trade in educational services. Some major institutions are signatories to this agreement like- Association of universities and Colleges, Canada (representing 91 public and private Canadian universities), American Consul of Education (representing 1800 Accredited degree granting colleges and universities in the U.S), European University Association representing 20 national rector's conferences and 537 individual universities across the European continent, Consul for Higher Education accreditation, representing 3000 accredited degree handing colleges and universities and 60 recognized institutes in the U.S.
