A FEW years ago one would buy a pair of sunglasses, brand inconsequential, for the summer and subsequently, as traffic peaked, as a glare control anti pollution measure.
But today, UV protection aside, sunglasses are sought after as a must have accessory to go with the attire, reflecting Generation Next's `wear your attitude' philosophy.
Shades are in vogue. Not only are people familiar with Oakley, Ralph Lauren, Armani and Pierre Cardin, one finds them taking to season-specific shades now. You find them opting for cool blue mercury coated anti glare and anti-reflection shades during summer, ones without any coating for the monsoon where the emphasis is on colour, and finally for polaroids during winter. Also, they buy darker shades for day wear and a few lighter tones for the soirees. About the 2004 summer collection, one finds lot of variety in sunglasses.
Most of them are unisex in terms of styling. Two toned sunglasses are in vogue.
If Tom Cruise glorified the cooling Predator, J Lo makes those tinted shades look divine. So this year tortoise shell and grey single colour are a no no. Double shades are haute from tinted pinks, greys and purples to even a metal blue and burnt orange combo, to match various moods. Apart from the hue, lenses are available in new age acrylic and polycarbonate material. The latter is scratchproof, lightweight and safe thus sought after by bikers. One can also pick up some cool designer prescription sunglasses this year.
In terms of styling, rimless glasses are in fashion.
Hence, standard rectangular shapes for lenses are passé, paving the way for those featuring unconventional serrate cuts. But if you need a frame, titanium is advisable.
Popular brands such as Killer Loop and Ray Ban and higher end Gucci, Oxydo and Diesel have come up with their 2004 styles for the season, priced between Rs. 1,500 and Rs. 60,000.
Also, with a new brand of fashion conscious youth taking to high streets these days, opting for affordable trendy eyewear, companies are launching fashionable easy-on-the-pocket eyewear. A case in point is the Fastrack I-Gear range of designer eyewear.
Designed by Neil Foley, product designer, Titan Design Studio, the collection priced between Rs. 695 and Rs. 1,895 comprises 40 models in the core and fashion categories, including the bikers collection for men and softer rimless anti fog lens for women.
