G.V.Ramana Rao captures the moods at the `Shaan'daar shaam at Vijayawada Club

It's the time to disco sang the audience rocking to the rhythm of a dance number from Kal Ho Na Ho as if there is no tomorrow. Playback music reigned at the concert of Indi-pop star, Shaan. Though the song It's the time to disco was not one of his own babies, Shaan obliged the audience and rendered it for them twice, once with his dance troupe doing disco and another just before concluding his concert. Shaan sent the audience into raptures bouncing and prancing like Mike Jaggers radiating waves of energy into the already-excited crowd.
In perfect sync with his partner, Varsha Mathur, Shaan belted out dozens of songs, some written and composed by himself and others, he did for films. Koi kahe kehta rahe and woh ladki hai kahan from the super hit film Dil chahta hai and a heady song from the runaway musical hit Taal were well-received. O re kanchi from Ashoka was a pleasant surprise. Several in the audience raised their eyebrows in real surprise when Shaan sang the super hit song Ghanan Ghanan from the soundtrack of super-duper hit Lagaan. Many did not know that Shaan was also on the big troupe of artistes that included greats like Udit Narayan, Alka Yagnik, Sukhwinder Singh, Shankar Mahadevan and Kishori Gowariker that rendered the number. The on-stage props, kaleidoscopic lighting and the talented dancers sponsored by Royal Stag Mega Music were the best the concert-going crowd of the city have seen till date. The stroboscopic lights and other special effects set a dream-like mood on the stage. Slipping into different costumes each time they went off the stage only to come back was indeed an incredible achievement for the talented dancers. The Shaan concert is easily the `Cleopatra' of shows that came to town so far.
The Vijayawada Club on the bank of river Krishna provided the perfect ambience for the musical extravaganza. Fresh cool breeze from the river helped keep the heat and passion at the venue in check. The voices of Shaan and Varsha had a magical effect on the audience. Shaan, in a most clever way, kept substituting `Vijayawada' for rhyming words in the lyrics sending the audience into ecstasy. The duet-debate `Boys are best. No, girls are best' had everybody dancing and laughing. Jugalbandi, scatting and even rap type of songs were performed with great ease and harmony by the duo. Bengalis were on their feet jumping in joy when Shaan suddenly switched over to a song in their mother tongue.
Shaan's eagerness to perform songs from his new album Aksar was evident. There was tremendous cheering when he sang One Love from the new album. This is a song Shaan performed with the International group Blue. For a section of youth, the music, clime and lights proved more intoxicating than what they obviously consumed before coming to the concert. A young and attractive couple created a flutter when they suddenly went into a jig in front of the stage. The audience literally booed the private security who swooped on them and dragged them away.
Shaan was all praises for the Indi-pop connoisseurs of Vijayawada whom he commended as "people who enjoyed themselves in a very dignified way unlike the people of some other cities." Shaan must be really fond of Vijayawada because it is the only city in South India that was included in his Aksar itinerary leaving out cities like Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. This is the third performance of the Indi-pop star in our very own city.
