All-woman clinic opens

Take heart, men. The women docs will treat you too

A number of women don't want to be examined by male doctors.

THE KASTURBA he Kasturba Medical College Hospital came up with a unique concept on World Health Day on April 7 to dedicate the same to people of Dakshina Kannada, particularly women, by opening Mangalore's first all-woman evening clinic at its Bejai unit.

This clinic is entirely managed by women. Its 27 doctors, besides the supporting staff, are all women. Many women have inhibitions while discussing their health with or being examined by male doctors. For them, the all-woman clinic is a boon. Doctors specialising in various branches are pm call in this clinic, said D.P. Saraswat, Chief Operating Officer They include experts in the field of general medicine, ophthalmology, ENT, clinical psychology, gynaecology, pain and palliative care, paediatrics, surgery, and physiotherapy. Moreover, Padmini Prasad, well-known gynaecologist, sexologist and marriage counsellor of Bangalore, will visit this clinic the first Wednesday of every month. She is probably the only woman sexologist in Karnataka who treats cases of sexual dysfunction for both men and women. Dr. Padmini Prasad is the faculty for several courses related to sexual and mental health offered by Kuvempu University. She is also member of the grievances committee to look into sexual harassment at work places constituted by the Commissioner of Police, Bangalore. Incidentally, several patients from Mangalore go all the way to Bangalore to consult her. Her coming here will save time and money to a number of them.

The clinic will initially function from 4.30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Incidentally, the doctors will also treat men and children.
