DAMES behind the DUDES

Kudos to the charm and efficiency of these women behind the roaring success of their celebrity spouses, says P. Sujatha Varma.

Lagadapati Padmasri

UNLIKE THE semi-clad bimbos who crave to grab attention at the drop of a hat, they are dignified, collected and composed. Learning to aim high, to move beyond minor obstacles and work towards the bigger object, they portray the true essence of being a woman who is brilliant but quiet achiever. They are daring, admirable and command a high respect for their zealous spirit and enthusiasm. Armed with loads of confidence, passion, grit and most importantly, an unwavering focus, they make us sit up and take notice of them. And all this they do it so beautifully, without being preachy. Here's wishing them a great going ahead!

LAGADAPATI PADMASRI, wife of the Congress candidate for Vijayawada Lok Sabha seat, L. Rajagopal, has a voice that comes clear and leaves an impact on the listeners. In the process of learning to assist, first her father, the former Union Minister, P. Upendra, and now her husband, Lagadapati Rajagopal, fight the battle of ballot, she has clearly undergone a transition from a talented home-maker to a thorough professional who can handle the craftiest of her rivals with dexterity and confidence. She doesn't let fear cripple her courage and prevent her from accomplishing her dreams. Born in Khammam and brought up in Kolkata and Delhi, Padmasri is, at the moment, busy campaigning for her hubby dear for almost 14 to 15 hours daily. "He should be given a chance to prove himself. He has been living here since his childhood and is well aware of the local problems. He is fresh and enterprising and is bound to make a good politician. Politics should be treated as a profession where a person could make use of his education to serve people,'' feels Padmasri whose desire to be a journalist took a back seat after she got married to Rajagopal in 1986.

The couple is blessed with two sons. She covered a distance of 750 km in the Praja Prasthanam by the former CLP leader, Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, in addition to the more recent 110 km Samrudhi Andhra pada yatra. "Initially, it was tough as there were not many women participants. But, it was great matching steps with a leader like Dr. Rajasekhar Reddy,'' she recollects. She is warm and shy, with a smile that can put anyone at ease almost at once.

Gadde Anuradha

Describing GADDE ANURADHA, the dainty wife of the Telugu Desam Party candidate for Kakipadu Assembly constituency, Gadde Ramamohan, is difficult. How does one consolidate the image of a celebrity's wife on the one hand with that of a simple housewife who wishes nothing more than the happiness of her small family comprising her better half and two sons on the other.

Ask her about the hectic campaigning schedule, which keeps her on toes for almost the entire day, she explains, "It has been a growing experience. We are driven to do better each time, in a more cautious way.'' Anuradha feels blessed to be placed where she is today. "The kind of love and adulation we get is overwhelming and I strongly feel that we should live up to their expectations,'' she says with determination. Ever since her husband shot into limelight as a fresh-faced politician, his meteoric rise continued unabated. Nothing seemed to stand between him and success. And, Anuradha had been with him, both during the thrilling heights and the depressing lows of life. Hailing from Gudlavalleru, a small town near Gudivada, she did her M.Sc from Banaras Hindu University and was married to Ramamohan in 1982. For relaxation, she loves to go shopping or watch a movie. "It used to be great fun when both of us together would go on a shopping binge in the past. But now, he finds it slightly embarrassing to come along forcing me to depend on my friends and relatives,'' she chuckles. She finds him very alive to people's problems and that he never mixes work with his personal life makes him all the more adorable for her.

Vinaya Kumari

Though tired after a hectic day-long campaign, VINAYA KUMARI'S eyes light up at the very mention of her celebrity husband, Chalasani Aswani Dutt who produced Tollywood block-busters like Eduru Leni Manishi, Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari, Indra and the latest Gangotri. He is now the TDP candidate for Vijayawada Lok Saba constituency. Despite being a celebrity's wife, she lived in her own cocoon. But, not any more.

The stupendous success and the immense popularity that came the couple's way notwithstanding, she continues to lead a simple life. Hardworking, intelligent and a knowledgeable person, it is fascinating to watch her donning the multifaceted role of a dutiful wife and an affectionate mother to her three pretty daughters, Swapna, Priyanka and Sravanthi. Is she comfortable with the idea of her hubby taking a plunge into active politics? Of course. He is a workaholic and a perfectionist who doesn't rest until he achieves the best. I see no reason why his sincere efforts to be an honest and upright politician should fail,'' she maintains. Realising that stamping out the initial fear is not just a personal triumph but a social priority as well, she has decided to act courageous. Not in a hurry to taste success, as she knows that it may take a while to arrive, she is not ready to be disillusioned. Gifted with a mature outlook, she is toiling hard with dedication, hoping other things to fall in place.
