HIS PASSION, OUR OBSESSION

His creativity is growing with his moustache. The young celebrity in the making, Ratna Prabhu, sibling of the latest sensation in the Indi-pop world, the rave Smita, is making the owners of cell phones dance to his tunes, says G.V.RAMANA RAO.

ALEXANDER GRAHAM Bell would have never imagined that the world's greatest musical composers would pay tribute to him. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Peter Ilyych Tchaikovsky, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, George Frederic Handel, Johnnes Brahms, Frederic Francois Chopin, Richard Wagner to mention just a few.

All the best and most catchy tunes created by these composers have been made the ring tones that literally walk the talk with the numero uno in the world today.

The mobile phone revolution has paved the way for the ring tone explosion. Just a decade ago, all telephones rang the same way. But, today you name the tune and there is a ring tone to match.

Even the great composers have become passé in the deluge of tunes and tones. From the theme of `Mission Impossible' composed by Doctor Twilight to the hit songs of the latest Telugu film are just an SMS away for the ring tone-savvy folks.

The latest fad in college is to be the dude with the latest ring tone. Some of them change their ring tones more often than they change their innerwear.

Since everyone cannot afford to be an A.R.Rehman, they are forced to rely on some source to download it. The service providers offer a wide range of ring tones.

What does it take to select the best bits from Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake or Nutcracker and convert it into a programme that can be sent by SMS to customers.

Ratna Prabhu, Vijayawada's own A.R.Rehman of ring tones, says it comes to him naturally. This may be because music runs in the family.

Ratna is the kid brother of Coastal Andhra's first pop singer, Smita. The siblings inherited the talents from their mother, Jogu Prasad, a woman entrepreneur and an amateur singer.

In just two months, the robust youth has composed over a 100 ring tones using the `ring tone composer' on his mobile phone.

He has entered into a contract with MAA TV channel, which is keen on buying all his ring tones. Just out of junior college, the boy has converted his hobby into a roaring business venture.

The TV channel sends him the names of two or three films every week and Ratna Prabhu composes and dispatches them by SMS.

Ring tones keep proliferating, so does the music. Creative guys like Ratna Prabhu will always be in demand. His favourite ring tone is the theme from `Terminator'.

The latest additions to his collection of ring tones are songs from `Allari' Naresh-starrer Nénu (remake of Tamil hit Kadal Kondén).

Born and brought up in Vijayawada, Ratna Prabhu studied in NSM Public School and Siddartha Arts and Science College. He is very much like the boys of his age.

This handsome, six-foot tall guy enjoys playing basketball and is a favourite of many in his college. Krishna Prabhu, at the moment, is busy composing ring tones besides sending applications to colleges in the USA where he intends to pursue his higher studies.

In spite of a busy schedule, he manages to take time off for his close friends and have a gala time. Driving around the town in his father's Lancer or Matiz with a bunch of his friends is his way of unwinding.

He hopes to own a Ferrari some day and dreams of gaining command over the keyboard. When he is by himself he listens to music and likes the band group `Blue' and also enjoys the raps of Eminem.

Of the poppers, he likes the Latino singer, Enrique Iglesias and has a very high regard for the likes of A.R.Rehman and Eevan Shankar Raja.

Ratna Prabhu revels in playing basketball and has represented Andhra Pradesh for under-14 and under-17 championships. But, the game has been reduced to mere fun and fitness now.

Armed with an equal dose of passion and enthusiasm, the boy sure is all set to go places.
