Stately splendour

Palm trees lend grace to gardens and avenues. They look attractive in pots too

PALMS ARE Tropical plants that need very little care and have a long life. They lend a statuesque beauty to gardens or avenues. They look attractive in pots as well, gracing both interiors and exteriors.

Bright sun and adequate water are essential to keep the tough, feathery leaves green and fresh. Palms kept indoors can look glossy by wiping the leaves gently with a wet cloth.

A rich free-draining soil is ideal. Mature plants break into fruit of different varieties, notably the areca palm, with its attractive clusters of red pods. The areca flower in long white strands is eye-catching, and is used on auspicious occasions.

There are many types of palms — most popular are the Kentia, Caryotu, Licuala, Livistona, Phoenix and Rhapis.

A variety that is much in demand is the expensive red stalked Sealing Wax palm — an arresting sight in any garden, with its bright combination of red stem and green leaves.

The Cycas Revoluta is also a fantastic specimen — almost an architectural feature in itself. The palm is pest-free and affords aesthetic pleasure to gardeners. More so, as very little effort is involved in raising them.
