For clean and sparkling teeth

Q: I brush my teeth twice everyday. But I find some deposits in my teeth. I had a cleaning done recently. At that time my dentist commented on my poor oral hygiene. I don't understand how the deposits get accumulated though I brush two times a day. Also let me know for how many months can I use a tooth brush. Kindly advice.

Mr.Prem

A: You may be brushing your teeth twice daily, but after every meal, a sticky substance called plaque or deposits as you call them, get stuck. You need to gargle after every meal to remove all food particles.. Drink plenty of water. Chewing gum once a day also helps to remove small particles of food and stimulates saliva, which is a natural cleanser. Your dentist will also teach how to brush effectively. A professional cleaning once a year and a check up twice a year is an absolute must to keep deposits in check for sparkling teeth. An average medium toothbrush can last you for 2 months. If it loses shape earlier than that please throw it away.

Q: My name is Vindhya. I am 25 years old. I have been advised to undergo orthodontic treatment to correct my teeth. But my friends scare me saying that if I go in for an ortho treatment at this age, my teeth will start shaking and slowly I will start loosing them. Is this true? I would like to have your opinion.

Dear Vindhya,

According to modern concepts you can correct your teeth till you are 50 years old! It is true that ideally the treatment should have been done between 10 and 15 years of age but it is better late than never! In fact correcting irregularly arranged teeth can improve the health of your gums and the longevity of your teeth. Go ahead and make that attempt to look your best. It's worth it, and more important, it is very safe.

Q: I have a problem of bad breath. Whenever I talk to people I feel like blocking my mouth with a handkerchief. I do normal brushing and also use mouth wash. But the problem persists.

Mr. Navin

A: Bad breath can be due to local or internal causes.

Local causes:

* Eating strong smelling foods like garlic, onion etc.

* Drinking milk and other milk based beverages and not rinsing your mouth after consuming them.

* Plaque and tartar deposits which have accumulated.

* Loose gums and gum problems.

* Food sticking between the teeth.

* Not gargling or brushing regularly.

Systemic causes:

* Poor digestion and gastric problem.

* Constipation.

* Amoebiasis or ulcers.

* Poor diet and dietary habits.

* Chronic infections or diseases.

* Worms

You will have to visit a dentist to assess your problem.
