Scent to follow

Summer heat calls for generous use of antiperspirants, deodorants and a touch of perfume. And though all three are smell-good, feel-good options; they have very different uses. Read on to find out.

SUMMER HEAT brings trickles of sweat that soak our clothes and wet our bodies. A natural mechanism, sweating sheds out the excess body heat, which is produced during body metabolism.

And stale sweat gives off a most unwanted odour. To counter that and for an all-day feeling of freshness, the use of perfumes, deodorants and anti-perspirants has become a need. The beauty stores in the city are flooded with both Indian and International brands of perfumes and deodorants. But to decide on which perfume to wear and what deodorant to use is a big question. There are two ways of choosing and wearing a perfume successfully. One is to pick it by instinct and the other to wear it like a connoisseur. Summer is a time when perfumes are much in demand. The sweaty atmosphere makes you run for a spray of perfume. "Most of the International brands have introduced perfumes to meet the needs of the summer season like ` Fahrenheit summer' for men from Christian Dior, ` Pleasure' summer wear for women from Estee Lauder, `Contradiction' from Calvin Klein" says Mohammed of `Dezire' at Esplanade shopping complex.

Since summer heat intensifies the scent, choose ones with lower concentration of perfume oils. Light and fresh scents help to perk you up and cool you as well. Splash a unisex fragrance. For comfort and to cool down refrigerate and then apply eau de cologne and citrus water. . Try the perfumes with citrus notes, as they are stimulating. It helps to overcome fatigue and increases energy. Indian summer calls for warm, mellow, full-bodied aromas.

Deodorants v Antiperspirants- The term antiperspirant and deodorants are entirely two different products though they are used interchangeably. They rely on different chemical reactions to achieve their purposes. Deodorants help fight body odour whereas antiperspirants reduce perspiration and body wetness. Both problems are caused by two different sets of glands. Perfumes are a totally different product. They only aid to mask body odour and not do away with it. Deodorants are based on agents, which attack odour-producing bacteria, while antiperspirants are based on astringent salts, which retard the flow of eccrine sweat. In addition to slowing perspiration, most antiperspirants also act as deodorants. "Antiperspirants and deodorants are usually available as aerosols and in the form of liquid spray, liquid roll-on, creams, powder and sticks. The smell and the variety are tempting. People usually end up being very confused by the fragrances." Says Rajeev. M of Star Duty Paid shop in the city.

Considering the health hazards of these products, it's best to avoid them unless you really feel the need. In case you are using them be careful while making the choice, then opt for deodorants containing a bactericide. If it's a sweat problem then settle for an astringent salt type antiperspirant. Check the label claims for ingredients that are less harmful. " The chronicle of antiperspirants and deodorants is that they contain chemicals that are first introduced then banned. According to the American Cancer Society antiperspirants are more harmful than deodorants," comments Dr. paul.P Kuriakose, a General Physician. These aromatic liquids can cause skin irritation by the acidic pH of astringent salt. Aerosols can accidentally be sprayed into the eyes. All the aluminium salts that are present in antiperspirants are very acidic when mixed with perspiration leading to discolouration of clothing (especially whites) and weakening of textile fibres of clothes. This makes clothes more susceptible to wear and tear.

"For women some flavours that are ideal for summer are citrus, chamomile, rosemary, mint etc. Fragrances like Gucci- Envy, Lancôme- Tresor, Elizabeth Arden- Green Tea, Davidoff-Cool Waters etc," suggests Meena Manuel, an ardent collector of perfumes. Gone are the days when you had to eagerly wait for your expatriate relatives to bring you the fragrance. They are now easily available in our city. "It's difficult to step out door in this scorching weather without smelling good. It gives me some kind of confidence to meet my clients," says Sujith Nayar a local businessman. Every clothing cognoscente knows that using the right scent enhances the look and leaves a mystery trail of fragrance. Without its use dressing is never complete.
