Stalemate continues

NO NEW titles have been registered with the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce as the stand off between the producers and AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes) continues with the Chamber siding with the producers' council, leading to the formation of a parallel film chamber by Mohan Lal and his supporters. It all started with the producers taking exception to the artistes entering into a contract with Asianet, a private television channel for conducting its awards nite. The producers' council and the Chamber felt the artistes had violated the agreement, entered into when Mammootty was secretary of AMMA that the artistes will not participate in star nites organised by television channels. The Chamber has now imposed conditions on the artistes and said that they should sign an agreement before starting work. The conditions include the remuneration structure, restricting the number of persons accompanying the stars. The conditions covered directors and technicians too to complete the film within a stipulated period except under unforeseen circumstances. The artistes refused to sign as they felt insulted and that the producers had been left free and were not bound by the Chamber regarding payment etc., They insisted producers should also be included in the new conditions laid by the Chamber. The chamber in turn rejected their demand and went a step further stating that it will not recognise AMMA.

With the Chamber refusing to register new titles and allow film shooting with those who have not fallen in line, veteran actor Mohan Lal had started a parallel Film Chamber with like-minded friends that started registering titles for new films. But the new body failed to get the recognition from the apex body SIFCC, leaving the stalemate to continue. Meanwhile, most Malayalam heroines have turned to Tamil and Telugu films for work.
