Rocking ride

School of Rock (English)
Cast: Jack Black, Joan Cusack
Director: Richard Linklater

THERE ARE those caught in a time warp for whom "real music" begins and ends with rock `n' roll. For the people who live by this credo, the incredible gleeful School of Rock really rocks. Jack Black, part time musician and whole time live wire comedian invests an amazing zip into his role as hell raiser guitarist Dewey Finn.

Dewey is thrown out of the band he founded because of his penchant for 20-minute-guitar solos and stage dives. Way behind with the rent, things are going bad for Dewey with his nerdy roommate Ned's shrewish girlfriend Patty making life miserable. Ned has given up on music to become one of "them" and is doing well for himself as a substitute teacher.

A call comes for Ned from an exclusive prep school and Dewey decides to impersonate Ned and take up the job. The suspicious 10-year-olds and equally wary principal Rosalie Mullins are just some of the stumbling blocks in Dewey's path.

When Dewey hears the student play at their music class, he decides he could convert them into a bonafide rock band and participate in the local battle of the bands. Everyone in class is given a job from lead guitar to the cellist playing bass. Those who cannot play are given other portfolios like surveillance, lights, equipment and designer. The bossy Ms Know it All is made the manager.

A crash course in rock and roll - Dewey is horrified that the class only know Christina Aguilera and Lisa Minnelli - and the group is ready to rock. The ending has horrified parents, teachers, principal and groovy rockers coming together in rousing climax.

Jack Black who we last saw in Shallow Hal is in his element here. Richard Linklater, who helmed the deliciously romantic, Before Sunrise, (please catch it the next time it is aired on telly) has given us this wonderfully funny movie that is intelligent and stops short of being treacly cute. A perfect family film which children will enjoy for the chance to live out a dream of being a rock star and adults can trip on for the musical references.

The music will have all the 60s aficionados sigh with rapture. The drummer is asked to listen to Rush, the keyboardist to Yes and the singer to the vocals in Pink Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky. Songs include snatches of Touch Me (Doors), Substitute (The Who) and Emigrant Song (Led Zeppelin). You can almost hear the city rockers say yeah baby yeah!
