Bardaasht (Hindi)
Cast: Bobby Deol, Lara Dutta,
Riteish Deshmukh
Director: E. Niwas
THE GOOD thing about this film is it is directed by E. Niwas, the man who gave us the hard-hitting Shool not long ago. The bad thing is, Niwas decides to walk down Guddu Dhanoa lane. The worst thing is he remembers midway that he is Niwas and not Dhanoa.
So, he incorporates a few bad elements of the Dhanoa way of filmmaking. For instance, the loud, over-the-top dialogues and the bullets and action at the end. And retains only a handful of his own good things. For instance, the suspense drama the film develops into midway through. Too bad, he falls between the two stools and comes up with a film that aims to use Bobby Deol's mass appeal but keeps him under leash almost till the end. In between, just when the audience get into the rhythm with Lara Dutta's incisive lawyer, Niwas remembers his hero is Deol, and cuts short an interesting byplay.
That quite sums up a film that starts from nowhere and ends up nowhere. We have Deol as a doting brother to Riteish Deshmukh's blundering young guy. All is fine until the little boy ends up on the wrong side of the law. Believed killed in an encounter, he disappears from the scene, leaving the field to Deol to show his wooden jaw all the way, as an avenging brother. Now taking help from lawyers, now finding that if the cops are corrupt, the lawyers are no better, he takes the law into his own hands. The end is predictable, as is Deol's attempt at breathing life into a listless film.
Watch this Bobby Deol-starrer only if you want to know how tree trunks can have better powers of expression than this man who can be a charmer with the right dose of direction, and just wooden if the baton-holder goes on leave. Watch it if you want to know that a clutch of films after Andaaz, Lara Dutta still does not know anything about voice modulation. Acting is still only fluttering her made-up eyelashes! Watch this if you want to know how a talented man like Niwas can let his skill go waste. Otherwise, stay home. This one with its timeworn plot, forgettable music and hackneyed direction, is easily avoidable.
