India in black and white

An exhibition of photographs by Marie Accomiato at the Alliance Francaise de Trivandrum captures the spirit of India.

FOR DECADES, India has been the haunt of photographers from all over the world. They have travelled the length and breadth of this country to capture the images that it is made of. Yet, only a few have been able to capture the sights and colours of this land as beautifully as the Algerian-born French artiste, Marie Accomiato. Her photographs offer us a completely different way of looking at our country.
A collection of Marie's photographs is now on display at Alliance Francaise de Trivandrum in the city.
The exhibition, `Carnets indiens' (Notes from India), comprises 31 photographs that speak eloquent tales of the Indian subcontinent. Marie's wanderlust and the haunting enchantress that is India made Marie venture upon a fascinating tour of the country, lasting seven long years.
The misty roads, groves and temples of Darjeeling, harvest season and squares of Nepal, dance and song and hijras of Rajasthan, the Ganges in Benares, temples of South India, vibrant rhythms of Kalaripayattu and Kochi bathed in twilight have been paradoxically captured in black and white.
"Our best photographers come to India to test their mettle," says Dominique Girard, Ambassador of France in India. "They," he continues, "try to capture and hold in time the world of images that the Indian subcontinent is made of ... Marie Accomiato belongs to that breed of traveller who brings back to France a better understanding of India and offers Indians another way of looking at their own country."
A telling feature of Marie Accomiato's art is the simplicity with which she brings out the emotional facets of an event in an adept conjugation of black and white. Even the smallest of hints is for the careful observer a celebration of sensitive vision.
These photographs envisage the exotic charm that India has always had in store for her ardent admirers.
