Unsafe roads
THE PHENOMENAL increase in the number of vehicles, particularly two-wheelers, has brought in its wake high incidence of road accidents. One of the major contributors for this unhappy development is the lax enforcement of various rules under the Motor Vehicles Act. Having said this, I would also like to emphasise that self-discipline is also very important. Intolerance and "Me First" attitude are no small factors.
But the biggest and the most important reason for road accidents are the ways of two-wheeler drivers, and ironically, they are themselves the victims of most fatal accidents. Autorickshaws also contribute much to the traffic chaos and accidents.
Some of the common reasons for accidents are:
1. Overtaking from the left, despite there being plenty of room on the right.
2. Cutting right across the road to take a turn.
3. Lack of judgement while overtaking and crashing head-on into the oncoming vehicle.
4. No regard for the yellow line that serves as median.
5. Driving recklessly to beat the red signal.
6. BMTC buses stopping bang at the centre of the road.
Thing would improve greatly if we realise that roads are not racing tracks or stage for showing off one's swanky cars.
