The 23rd Thaalavaadyothsava keeps the beat going
|
THE PERCUSSIVE Arts Centre is celebrating its annual festival, Thaalavaadyothsava 2004, between May 27 and 31. As part of the festivities, it will felicitate musicians and others who have made invaluable contributions to the field of music. Also on the cards are a series of concerts and lectures on great personalities associated with music.
The Centre, first inaugurated as Palghat Mani Iyer Memorial Art Centre in 1981, was registered as Percussive Arts Centre in 1985. It furthers the tradition of Palghat T.S. Mani Iyer and disseminates knowledge about different aspects of percussive arts.
As part of the felicitation on May 27, the Palani Subramanya Pillai Award will be presented to M. Vasudeva Rao by Jagadguru Abhinava Vidya Shankara Bharathi Maha Swamiji of Sringeri, and the H. Puttachar Memorial Award will be presented to Anoor R. Dathatreya Sharma and the CMANA (USA) Prize will be presented to N. Amrit by M.S. Thimmappa, Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore University. Mr. Thimmappa will also release a souvenir on the occasion.
The programme, to be held at the JSS Auditorium, I Main, 8th Block, Jayanagar, begins at 6 p.m..
The valedictory of the festival will be held on May 31. As part of that, Governor T.N. Chaturvedi will present the K. Puttu Rao Memorial Palghat Mani Iyer Award to L. Subramaniam, and writer U.R. Ananthamurthy will present the Amruthur Janaki Ammal Memorial Competition for Percussions. He will also deliver the valedictory address. The programme to be held at the Chowdiah Memorial begins at 6 p.m.
The felicitation on May 31 will be followed by a violin recital by L. Subramaniam. He will be accompanied by T.A.S. Mani on the mridanga, H.P. Ramachar on the khanjari, Giridhar Udupa on the ghata, and S.V. Balakrishna on the morching.
